CQC-ready training matrix guide

What a useful training matrix should show

A training matrix should help managers understand whether the workforce is safe, current and ready for the care being delivered. It should show required training, completion evidence, expiry dates, overdue items, role requirements and any controlled exceptions.

What CQC and commissioners may expect

Managers should be able to explain how training links to role, service type, client need and deployment decisions. A static spreadsheet is harder to defend if it does not show ownership, evidence or recent changes.

Practical controls

  • Keep training requirements role-specific.
  • Record completion date, provider and evidence.
  • Track expiry and renewal status.
  • Show blockers before deployment.
  • Keep an audit trail of updates and exceptions.
